From the rain forest of the Olympic National forest to the ocean front campgrounds on the Pacific Ocean, intrepid campers can find a variety of camping options in Washington State. For those who want to stay closer to a larger metropolis, three campgrounds in Southwest Washington are just a short drive from Portland, Oregon.
Cape Disappointment State Park
Formerly known as Fort Canby State Park, Cape Disappointment is just outside the small fishing community of Ilwaco Washington where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean. The twisting road from Ilwaco goes up the mountain side with breathtaking views of the ocean, then drops down into the entrance to the park. On the way, visitor may even seen hang gliders jumping from the cliffs.
With more than 1700 acres, Cape Disappointment offers 250 year-round campsites, one room cabins and even yurts. Because of the popularity of the park, reservations are highly recommended.
Once in the park, visitors have much to do. The Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center offers tours, guided hikes and programs dedicated to the hardy travelers who explored the area in the early 1800s. Two working lighthouses are nearby, and visitors are welcome to climb to the top of the North Head lighthouse for views of the Pacific Ocean that cannot be beat. For those who prefer a bit more sedentary activity, storm watching, beachcombing and relaxing can be done at the ironically named Waikiki beach at the entrance to the campground.
Battle Ground Lake State Park
For those who prefer a campground a little closer to the big city, Battle Ground Lake State Park is only 45 minutes from Portland, Oregon. This park offers not only 25 standard campsites but also primitive campsites up to one half mile of hiking into the park, perfect for the weekend backpacker. Horse camps and group camps are also available.
The park offers a self guided nature trail and sky watch evening interpretive presentations. For those not quite committed to the camping experience, the city of Battle Ground is a short drive away, offering restaurants, movies and shopping. This provides the best of both worlds, as campers can hike, tent and still see a movie in the evening.
Sunset Falls Campground
For those looking for more privacy, Sunset Falls Campground is just 14 miles from Battle Ground. With only 18 camping sites, Sunset Falls Campground provides a less cultivated camping getaway. Tent and RV sites are available, but there are no hookups or hot showers. Sunset Falls Campground is the get away from civilization type getaway that many campers are looking for. Activities include hiking, berry picking, and the Pomeroy Living History Farm 11 miles away where visitors can learn how farming was done in the 1920s.
